Moving your itunes libray to a new PC!!
I went through computer hell this weekend, but I had a completely successful outcome in getting my itunes library migrated. Here are the steps, although a few may be over-kill, they worked for me! I didn’t even have to re-do any of my settings or re-enter my account info for itunes! YAY
First, make sure you update itunes on your old computer to the latest version. This is important! If your new computer has a different version then your old one, it may detect corruption in your settings or your library because it’s coming from a different version. So, you can either update your old computer with the newest one, or google the version you have on your old computer and install it on the new one.
Second, install itunes on your new computer, but DO NOT OPEN ITUNES! Important, install, but DO NOT OPEN IT!!!
Third:
You will need to backup the following folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\DJRobSD\Application Data\Apple Computer (REPLACE DJROBSD WITH YOUR WINDOWS USER NAME)
C:\Documents and Settings\DJRobSD\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer (REPLACED DJROBSD WITH YOUR WINDOWS USER NAME)
Fourth:
You will need to backup your itunes library files. The files are called “iTunes Library.itl” and “iTunes Music Library.xml” Make sure you know exactly where these are on your old PC, they are usually in: c:\documents and settings\DJRobSD\My Documents\My Music\itunes
Make sure you copy these files to your new documents and settings\<your user>\My Documents\My Music\itunes folder on the new computer
Fifth:
COPY ALL YOUR MUSIC. Make sure you double check in itunes where all your music is located. If you let itunes manage your music it should be in the c:\documents and settings\DJRobSD\My Documents\My Music\itunes, but if you didn’t, then you need to find all your files.
Finally:
Make sure everything is copied to the EXACT location on your new computer as old.
Fire up itunes and enjoy your library.
Seems tedious, but this gives you all your music, playlists, settings, etc. You will be asked to login when you open a file with DRM and it will have to authorize the new computer.
